John Needham, Head of Global Esports at Riot Games, shared the news of the 2021 league of legends World Championship.
Riot Games has confirmed that the 2021 League of Legends World Championship will move from China to Europe. The exact location has not yet been disclosed, but the main factors will be accessibility to the largest number of teams and players.
Numerous esports news sites have reported that growing travel restrictions and the renewal of COVID protocols have forced Riot Games to decide to move this year's World Championship outside of China. Sites like Upcomer and Dot Esports have reported difficulties getting a production team to China. And that teams competing for the last places in the World Championship still cannot get their visas, which should have happened so close to the event. The decision was made recently and was officially announced.

Global Esports Riot Games CEO John Needham spoke about LoL Esports' tough social media decision. In a video about the decision, Needham reveals that they worked hard with the Chinese Riot team and other partners to host an event that would span five major Chinese cities, offsetting last year's No Spectator Worlds. They also hoped that with the spread of COVID-19 vaccines, life in 2021 would be closer to normal than in 2020.
However, with the delta spreading again and the world gearing up for a fourth wave, travel restrictions make it difficult for teams to get guaranteed entry into the country. So Riot decided to move the event from China to Europe as they think they can host a safer event there. Needham has apologized to his Chinese partners and players, especially fans who may have to watch the Worlds 2021 from home again this year. Riot Games has pledged to maintain the integrity of the event at the highest level and to ensure that the majority of teams and players can attend its event.
Really wondering if the organizers of the championship in Europe will be able to repeat the scale of the event at the same level as in China ?!
